Datuk Tan Sui Fu explained to the committee members the process of designing the emblem.

The emblem of the Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association has appeared at countless events and occasions over the years. Many players who have worn the Kota Kinabalu team jersey are familiar with this highly creative emblem, but how many people of our generation actually know the origin of its design?

According to the designer of the association’s emblem, former acting president Datuk Tan Sui Fu, although the association had already been established in the late 1950s, it did not have an official emblem at the time. It was only around 1966 to 1967 that he began conceptualizing the idea for an emblem.

He explained that he initially wanted to create something based on English letters. Eventually, he transformed the letter “K” into the shape of a basketball hoop, complete with a rim and a basketball beside it.

The KKBA Emblem — Leading Us for Over Fifty Years!

The emblem of the Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association consists of a basketball and a hoop, symbolizing the spirit of sportsmanship and basketball itself. The letter “K” represents the first letter of Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association.

Meaning of the Emblem

  • The ball symbolizes basketball.
  • The letter “K” represents the Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association.
  • The light blue color symbolizes the promotion and development of basketball.
  • The orange color symbolizes the basketball itself.
  • The white color symbolizes friendship in competition.

The background color of the association’s flag is dark blue, with the association’s emblem displayed at the center. The dark blue color symbolizes cooperation and unity with other basketball associations.

The basketball and the “K” together formed a design that was simple yet elegant. Even today, younger generations still find the design modern and timeless. Without revisiting its history, many people would never realize that this emblem has already existed for more than forty years.

After the emblem was officially adopted by the association, it was first printed on the jerseys and jackets of the Kota Kinabalu men’s team that participated in the Sabah Cup in 1968. Perhaps under the blessing of this emblem, the team — led by Datuk Chan Swee Fook — went on to capture its first championship title, further enhancing the emblem’s historical significance.

According to records from the Registrar of Societies, the emblem application was submitted on February 10, 1969, and officially approved on February 21, 1969.
