On January 28, 2015, Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association (KKBA), fresh off its “2014 Year of Grand Slam,” was honored with the Sabah Best Sports Organization Award, setting a historic milestone for basketball in the state.

During the “Sukan Untuk Semua” Awards Ceremony organized by the Federal Youth and Sports Department of Sabah, Minister of Youth and Sports Sabah Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, personally presented the award to KKBA. This unprecedented accolade serves as official recognition and high praise for the association’s development of basketball within the state.

KKBA Deputy Chairman Chen Ee Sheng accepted the honor on behalf of the association, accompanied by Vice Chairmen Su Su Kiong, Dr. Shirley Tay, and Lim Suat Hong, as well as Technical Development Director Su Chee Siong. Along with the title, the association received RM3,000 in cash, a certificate, and a trophy.

In 2014, KKBA recorded its most brilliant performance in 57 years, sweeping three age-group State Championship titles (both Men’s and Women’s) and achieving a Triple Crown at the Borneo Cup. Beyond court performance, the association demonstrated excellence in management, financial operations, tournament organization, and overall development, leading the Federal Youth and Sports Department’s selection committee to name them the standout winner.

By winning the state-level award, KKBA also became the automatic nominee to represent Sabah in the competition for the National Best Sports Organization Award.

KKBA Chairman Fung Chun Fatt stated that the association has always operated with diligence and dedication. By hosting consistent tournaments across all levels and actively sending teams to state competitions, they hope to contribute meaningfully to the state’s basketball scene.

“Like other sports organizations, we rely on major sponsors to host events and cover competition costs. Through our ‘Sports Partner’ concept built over many years, we have embraced the spirit of ‘unity is strength.’ It is only through the collective cooperation of schools, principals, parents, coaches, referees, and players that we have successfully pushed KK basketball to this peak.”

He added that winning the Best Sports Organization Award proves that KKBA’s long-term efforts and goals have not been in vain. Instead, this honor serves as inspiration to move forward even more aggressively, noting that in the world of sports development, “if you are not moving forward, you are falling behind.”
