The Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association is the oldest basketball organization in Sabah. \u300a\u4e9a\u5e87\u7bee\u7403\u603b\u4f1a\u300b(The Jesselton Amateur Basketball\u3000Association)\uff0c \u524d\u8eab\u662f\u4e9a\u5e87\u4e1a\u4f59\u7bee\u7403\u603b\u4f1a(Kota Kinabalu Amateur Basketball\u3000Association)\uff0c\u521b\u7acb\u4e8e1958 \u5e74\u3002<\/strong><\/p>

\u672c\u4f1a\u4e8e1958 \u5e74\u7531\u4e00\u6279\u70ed\u7231\u7bee\u8fd0\u5148\u8d24\u4eec\u53f7\u53ec\u4e0b\uff0c\u8131\u79bb\u4e9a\u5e87\u4f53\u80b2\u4f1a\u81ea\u7acb\u95e8\u6237\uff0c\u5e76\u7531\u62ff\u7763\u9ec4\u5b50\u53d1\u62c5\u4efb\u4f1a\u957f\uff0c\u5353\u660e\u9053\u5148\u751f\u62c5\u4efb\u9996\u5c4a\u4e3b\u5e2d\u3002<\/p>

\u968f\u7740\u9a6c\u6765\u897f\u4e9a\u6210\u7acb\u4e4b\u540e\uff0c\u91cd\u65b0\u6ce8\u518c\u5728\u5927\u9a6c\u793e\u56e2\u6ce8\u518c\u6cd5\u4ee4\u4e0b\uff0c\u4e8e1966 \u5e743 \u67087 \u65e5\u83b7\u5f97\u6279\u51c6\uff0c\u6ce8\u518c\u53f7\u7801\u4e3aSAB-2\uff0c\u4e43\u4e3a\u6c99\u5df4\u5dde\u6700\u65e9\u5408\u6cd5\u6ce8\u518c\u7684\u793e\u56e2\u7ec4\u7ec7\u4e4b\u4e00\u3002<\/p>

\u76f4\u81f31991 \u5e74\u56fd\u9645\u7bee\u534f\u4fee\u8ba2\u89c4\u7ae0\uff0c\u672c\u4f1a\u624d\u7531\u201c \u4e9a\u5e87\u4e1a\u4f59\u7bee\u7403\u603b\u4f1a\u201d \u6613\u540d\u4e3a\u201c \u4e9a\u5e87\u7bee\u7403\u603b\u4f1a\u201d\uff0c \u82f1\u6587\u7b80\u5199\u201cKKABA\u201d \u6539\u4e3a\u201cKKBA\u201d\u3002<\/p>

\u968f\u7740\u653f\u5e9c\u4fee\u8ba21997 \u5e74\u4f53\u80b2\u53d1\u5c55\u6cd5\u4ee4\uff0c\u89c4\u5b9a\u6240\u6709\u4f53\u80b2\u7ec4\u7ec7\u7eb3\u5165\u5927\u9a6c\u4f53\u80b2\u59d4\u5458\u4f1a(Pesurujaya Sukan Malaysia) \u4e4b\u540e\uff0c\u672c\u4f1a\u4e8e2012 \u5e74\u5e74\u5c3e\u6b63\u5f0f\u8131\u79bb\u793e\u56e2\u6ce8\u518c\u5c40\uff0c\u4e8e2013 \u5e741 \u670825 \u65e5\u83b7\u5f97\u6ce8\u518c\uff0c\u6ce8\u518c\u53f7\u7801\u662f03\/5531\/2013(SBH)\uff0c\u56fd\u6587\u540d\u79f0\u4e3aPersatuan Bola Keranjang Daerah Kota Kinabalu\uff0c\u6210\u4e3a\u4e86\u5dde\u9996\u5e9c\u60df\u4e00\u5408\u6cd5\u7684\u53bf\u7ea7\u7bee\u7403\u7ec4\u7ec7\u3002<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association (KKBA), formerly known as the The Jesselton Amateur Basketball Association<\/em>, was founded in 1958.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

The association was established in 1958 when a group of pioneers passionate about basketball came together to break away from the Jesselton Sports Association and form an independent body. Datuk Wong Tze Fatt served as President, while Mr. Cheuk Ming To was appointed as the first Chairman.<\/span><\/p>

Following the formation of Malaysia, the association was re-registered under the Societies Act of Malaysia, receiving approval on 7 March 1966 with registration number SAB-2. It is one of the earliest legally registered organizations in the state of Sabah.<\/span><\/p>

In 1991, after the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) revised its regulations, the association was renamed from the Kota Kinabalu Amateur Basketball Association<\/em> to the Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association<\/em>, and its English abbreviation was changed from \u201cKKABA\u201d to \u201cKKBA\u201d.<\/span><\/p>

Subsequently, following amendments to the Sports Development Act in 1997, which required all sports bodies to be placed under the jurisdiction of the Malaysian Sports Commissioner (Pesuruhjaya Sukan Malaysia), the association formally withdrew from the Registrar of Societies at the end of 2012. It was then re-registered on 25 January 2013 under registration number 03\/5531\/2013 (SBH), with its Malay name Persatuan Bola Keranjang Daerah Kota Kinabalu<\/em>, becoming the only legally recognized district-level basketball association in the state capital.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u4e9a\u5e87\u7bee\u8fd0\u6d3b\u52a8\u521d\u671f\u4e43\u662f\u7531\u4e9a\u5e87\u4f53\u80b2\u4f1a\u4e4b\u7bee\u7403\u5c0f\u7ec4\u6240\u8d1f\u8d23\u63a8\u884c\uff0c\u5f53\u65f6\u4e9a\u5e87\u4f53\u80b2\u4f1a\u8f96\u4e0b\u6709\u7fbd\u6bdb\u7403\u3001\u7530\u5f84\u3001\u8db3\u7403\u3001\u7f51\u7403\u53ca\u7bee\u7403\u7b49\u5c0f\u7ec4\u4e4b\u7ec4\u7ec7\u3002<\/p>

\u4e00\u5207\u7684\u884c\u653f\u3001\u7ecf\u8d39\u7686\u7531\u8be5\u4f53\u80b2\u4f1a\u5168\u6743\u5904\u7406\u3002\u552f\u6d3b\u52a8\u65b9\u9762\u4ec5\u9650\u4e8e\u4e00\u5e74\u4e00\u5ea6\u4e4b\u300c\u8d3a\u6069\u676f\u300d\u7403\u8d5b\u3002<\/p>

\u8be5\u56db\u9879\u7403\u7c7b\u6bd4\u8d5b\u5747\u5206\u522b\u5728\u4e9a\u5e87\u4e0e\u5c71\u6253\u6839\u8f6e\u503c\u4e3e\u529e\u3002<\/p>

\u9ed1\u767d\u961f\u7684\u5e76\u5408<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

\u8fdc\u57281951 \u5e74\u521d\u671f\u7531\u7bee\u575b\u8001\u5c06\u848b\u660e\u7965\u5148\u751f\u9886\u5bfc\u4e00\u6279\u7231\u597d\u7bee\u7403\u9752\u5e74\u7ec4\u6210\u300c\u9ed1\u767d\u300d\u961f\uff0c\u4ee3\u8868\u4e9a\u5e87\u53c2\u52a0\u7b2c\u4e00\u5c4a\u300c\u8d3a\u6069\u676f\u300d\u8d5b\u3002<\/p>

\u540e\u7ecf\u4e9a\u5e87\u4f53\u80b2\u4f1a\u4f1a\u8bae\u5f00\u4f1a\u59d4\u6d3e\u4e49\u52a1\u79d8\u4e66\u517c\u8db3\u7403\u5c0f\u7ec4\u4e3b\u4efb\u5353\u660e\u9053\u5148\u751f\u4e0e\u848b\u660e\u7965\u541b\u78cb\u5546\uff0c\u8981\u6c42\u89e3\u6563\u300c\u9ed1\u767d\u300d\u961f\uff0c\u5e76\u79ef\u6781\u534f\u52a9\u4f53\u80b2\u4f1a\u5c06\u7bee\u8fd0\u666e\u904d\u63a8\u5e7f\u81f3\u5168\u5dde\u5404\u5730\u3002<\/p>

Originally Under the Kota Kinabalu Sports Association<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

In the early days of basketball in Kota Kinabalu, the sport was organized and promoted by the basketball section under the Kota Kinabalu Sports Association. At that time, the association comprised several sections, including badminton, athletics, football, tennis, and basketball.<\/span><\/p>

All administrative matters and funding were fully managed by the association. However, basketball activities were limited to the annual \u201cHorne Cup\u201d tournament.<\/span><\/p>

These four major ball games were held on a rotational basis between Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan.<\/span><\/p>

The Merger of the \u201cBlack and White\u201d Team<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

As early as 1951, a group of basketball enthusiasts led by veteran player Mr. Chiang Ming Xiang formed the \u201cBlack and White\u201d team, representing Kota Kinabalu in the inaugural Horne Cup tournament.<\/span><\/p>

Subsequently, following a meeting of the Kota Kinabalu Sports Association, its Honorary Secretary and head of the football section, Mr. Cheuk Ming To, was appointed to negotiate with Mr. Chiang. They requested that the \u201cBlack and White\u201d team be dissolved and that efforts be focused on assisting the association in promoting basketball throughout the state.<\/span><\/p>

Understanding the greater good, Mr. Chiang agreed to disband the \u201cBlack and White\u201d team and integrate it into the basketball section of the Kota Kinabalu Sports Association.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Breaking Away from the Sports Association to Form an Independent Body<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Following the completion of the Kota Kinabalu Community Hall in 1958, and with the encouragement of the then President of the Sports Association, District Officer *Paul Spencer, it was believed that the basketball section could rely on the hall to host games and generate income through ticket sales. With matches able to be held both day and night, these favorable conditions led the basketball section to declare its separation from the Sports Association and become self-reliant.<\/span><\/p>

Subsequently, representatives from various teams and senior figures passionate about basketball were convened to establish the Kota Kinabalu Amateur Basketball Association<\/em>, with the mission of promoting the sport. In 1958, the first committee was elected, with Datuk Wong Tze Fatt as President; Lin Tze Ying as Vice President; Cheuk Ming To as Chairman; Teng Song Chen as Vice Chairman; Lim Chee Seng as Secretary; Chia Yan San as Treasurer; and committee members Yeung Kung Cheung, Wong Tong Kai, Kho Han Kiang, Wong Yau Min, Tay Teng Ing, and Sze Tu Seng.<\/span><\/p>

From that point onward, basketball in Kota Kinabalu began to move onto the right track. The committee members worked tirelessly to promote the sport and laid a solid foundation for its development. Without their dedication, the flourishing state of basketball in Kota Kinabalu today might not have been possible.<\/span><\/p>

*Paul Spencer was also the manager of Borneo Company Limited (BCL), a company established in 1856 and one of the oldest and most influential British trading firms in East Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah).<\/span><\/p>

Initiating the Formation of the Sabah Basketball Association<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

In 1958, the Kota Kinabalu Amateur Basketball Association took the lead in organizing the formation of the North Borneo Amateur Basketball Association (the predecessor of the Sabah Amateur Basketball Association). Representatives from basketball associations across the state were convened to discuss the establishment of the North Borneo body, as well as matters related to the Kota Kinabalu Cup basketball tournament. The meeting unanimously agreed to form the North Borneo Amateur Basketball Association and elected its first committee, with Chuk Ming To as President, Cheng Sai Yan as Secretary, and Siaw Yew Shan as Treasurer, while committee members were appointed from representatives of the various affiliated associations.<\/span><\/p>

In the same year, the inaugural Kota Kinabalu Cup Basketball Championship was held. Teams participating in this statewide tournament included Tawau, Lahad Datu, Tenom, Beaufort, Papar, Labuan, Tuaran, and Kota Kinabalu.<\/span><\/p>

The Tawau team emerged as the champion, coached by veteran figure Mr. Heng Cheng Chuk. The following year, the tournament was hosted in Kota Kinabalu, with the Kota Kinabalu team winning the title. Thereafter, the North Borneo (Sabah) team was invited by Sarawak to participate in the Simbang Wong Keng Chiang Gold Cup tournament.<\/span><\/p>

Twelve Presidents and Two Acting Presidents<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Over the past 60 years, the Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association (KKBA) has been led by twelve chairmans. Among them, Datuk Fung Chun Fatt served the longest, holding the position from 2009 until 2026, a total of 17 years. He was followed by Wong Yu Len (1993\u20132009), who served for 12 years; Tan Sri Henry Chin (1972\u20131979), who served for eight years; and Mr. Vincent Chok (1980\u20131986), who also served for seven years.<\/span><\/p>

During this period, there were two occasions when the chairman stepped down due to other commitments, and the vice chairmans served as acting chairmans, namely Datuk Tan Sui Fu (1969) and Mr. Su Shu Han (1992).<\/span><\/p>

The other seven chairmans were: the second president, the late Mr. Ng Kok Lim (1961\u20131964); Mr. Teng Song Chen (1965\u20131966); the late Mr. Chan Yuk Fatt (1970\u20131971); Mr. Albert Yong (1986\u20131991); the late Dato Alfred Chin\u00a0 (1991\u20131992); Tan Sri Goh Tian Chuan (2003\u20132006); and Mr. Lim Sheh Onn (2007).<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Rise at the End of the 20th Century<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Although the Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association has a long history, its performance in statewide competitions in the earlier years was relatively modest. Apart from winning the 4th Sabah Cup in 1968 on home ground, it only secured one other notable title in 1972\u2014the girls\u2019 Under-18 state championship in Tenom.<\/span><\/p>

At that time, strong teams from other districts, especially Tawau and Sandakan, dominated the competition. The Kota Kinabalu men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams often came close to winning championships but fell just short. Entering the restructuring period of the 1980s, Kota Kinabalu continued to struggle to reclaim a title.<\/span><\/p>

It was not until 1999\u2014after decades of development\u2014that Kota Kinabalu finally produced a strong batch of youth talent. They swept their opponents in the state Under-16 tournament held in Tawau, winning their first Under-16 championship. From then on, Kota Kinabalu averaged one to two titles per year. Ten years later, in 2009, the team achieved a remarkable breakthrough by winning eight championships and two runners-up titles in a single year, marking the beginning of its dominance in Sabah basketball.<\/span><\/p>

It is also worth noting the following milestones: the first Sabah Cup Men\u2019s title was won in 2001; the first Sabah Cup Women\u2019s title in 2009; the first state Under-18 Boys\u2019 title in 2002; the first state Under-18 Girls\u2019 title in 1972; the first state Under-16 Boys\u2019 title in 1999; and the first state Under-16 Girls\u2019 title in 2007.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div>

Annual Grand Slam<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Entering 2011, the Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association finally achieved its first-ever \u201cstatewide grand slam\u201d in history\u2014winning six championships across the three major state-level tournaments. This was an unprecedented and glorious milestone. A celebratory banquet was also held that year to host sponsors, teams, and advisors, gathering together to witness the association stepping onto a higher level.<\/span><\/p>

Two years later, in 2014, the association set its most perfect historical record by achieving an \u201cannual grand slam.\u201d Within a single year, across the three major state tournaments and the Borneo Cup, it remained undefeated and captured all nine championships\u2014an extraordinary achievement.<\/span><\/p>

Chairman Fung Chun Fatt expressed his heartfelt gratitude at the victory banquet, saying: \u201cThis is not the achievement of one person, but the result of the collective effort of the entire basketball association\u2014from committee members, sponsors, schools, coaches, players, to parents. It is through everyone\u2019s dedication and hard work that this honour was created. I dedicate this glory to all who participated in and contributed to this success!\u201d<\/span><\/p>

He further stated that this marked the peak of Kota Kinabalu basketball, but it was not the achievement of a single year alone. It was the result of over a decade of effort by successive presidents, committee members, coaches, and players. It also demonstrated that local basketball continued to thrive and develop, rather than decline.<\/span><\/p>

In addition, the Sabah Federal Youth and Sports Department awarded the \u201c2014 Sports Excellence Award,\u201d presenting the \u201cBest Sports Organization Award\u201d to the Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association. This was said to be an unprecedented honour in Sabah basketball history, further proving that the development of basketball in Kota Kinabalu had been widely recognized and highly regarded.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

As the only basketball organization in the state capital, Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association has organized countless major and minor tournaments over the years. These include the Olympic Women\u2019s Basketball Qualifying Tournament (1988), the 11th World Women\u2019s Basketball Championship (1990), two International Invitation Tournaments (1994 and 1997), the Agong\u2019s Cup (1982), the National Under-16 Basketball Championship (1999), as well as various state-level competitions.<\/span><\/p>
