Even before the founding of the Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association (KKBA), there were records of open tournaments being held in the Kota Kinabalu area. At that time, local businesses had already begun funding events, including commercial cups that sparked a craze for the sport.

According to basketball veteran Khew Vui Kee, two major open tournaments existed in the 1950s: the “Chan Li Chai Cup,” promoted by the late founding chairman of the KKBA, Datuk Wong Tze Fatt, and the “Red Lion Cup.”

The Chan Li Chai Cup served primarily as a selection trial for KK players to prepare for the Hearn Cup, while the Red Lion Cup was used to pick players for the Sabah Cup.

“Back then, there weren’t many teams,” Khew recalled. “School teams included All Saints, La Salle, and KK High School, while others included the ‘Black and White’ team and the Chinese Martial Arts Association.”

The Tiger Beer Cup Era

In the 1990s, Tiger Beer began sponsoring KKBA open tournaments. The inaugural edition in 1993 became a premier Division A open event in the region. The tournament ran for eight editions, nurturing countless elite players in the state and attracting national players. This gave local fans a rare chance to see top-tier talent in action—most notably the famous national center Ooi Da An, who was invited to compete in Sabah multiple times.

The Prestigious Repco STC Cup

In the history of Kota Kinabalu basketball, the Repco STC Cup Men’s Open stands out as one of the most unforgettable and exciting chapters, thanks to its lucrative prize pool.

In 2003, under the leadership of then-chairman Datuk Goh Tian Chuan, his company Everise Ventures Sdn Bhd sponsored the 1st Repco Cup with a total prize pool of RM10,000.

This attracted basketball elites from across the country to converge in Kota Kinabalu.

The success of this event significantly boosted the city’s basketball reputation and fostered exchange between local and national players.

2003 Results: Hot Valley emerged as champions, with Phun Motor and AD Asia taking second and third place, respectively.

2004 Expansion: Following the initial success, Everise Ventures Sdn Bhd continued its sponsorship in late December 2004, renaming the event the “Repco STC Cup” and increasing the prize pool to RM15,000.

During this era, teams spent heavily to recruit the best “import” players to boost their championship hopes. This marked a major milestone in the professionalization of local basketball. AD Asia claimed the title that year, followed by CKL Sports and Sri Utama.

In 2017, the STC Cup made a grand comeback. Teams from all over the state spared no expense to recruit top-tier players to join the fray, including 1Malaysia, I-World Marlin, Asia Enterprise, Labuan Wasps, and Ujana Kingfisher. The excitement peaked when I-World Marlin signed former Philippine national team player, the 6’11” Marcus Douthit, stealing the spotlight. Not to be outdone, Asia Enterprise assembled a roster featuring over half of the national team alongside Filipino talents. The multi-day tournament was packed with thrilling climaxes, culminating in Asia Enterprise sweeping all four of their games undefeated to claim the championship title.

Legacy of the Gold Cup

The KKBA also organized other heavyweight opens, such as the Datuk Chau Tet On Gold Cup, named after the then-President of the Sabah Basketball Association.

This tournament began in the early 1990s and ran for over ten editions.

In 2017, when the KKBL (league) faced organizing difficulties, the main sponsor agreed to pivot to a high-level invitational format: the STC Gold Cup. The rules were modified to allow teams to recruit up to four Filipino imports regardless of the number of national players on the roster, aiming to push the quality of play to its absolute peak.

This move was met with critical acclaim, as fans were treated to world-class performances locally. The event was a resounding success for the KKBA. AD Asia, bolstered by several national players and stellar performances from their Filipino imports, lived up to their reputation by seizing the championship trophy.
